NVIDIA launches RTX Video HDR, a new free feature that will allow you, to view SDR videos in HDR.

RTX Video HDR: What results can you expect?

The new RTX Video HDR feature will increase the dynamic range of the video. The video below will give you an idea of what can be achieved, but please note this is only a simulation. Turning the feature on is the only way to really experience the effect.

We should also note that RTX Video HDR is compatible with RTX Video Super Resolution, another NVIDIA technology that upscales videos online. In other words, a low-definition video can be viewed with both these effects; at the same time. Again, the video below gives an idea of the result.

Of course, this technology isn’t magic, and you can expect possible artifacts depending on the video that is being watched.

How can I turn RTX Video HDR on?

To try this new feature by yourself, you will need an RTX graphics card and an HDR10 compatible computer screen or TV. You also have to use a Chromium-based browser: this is the case for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, but not Firefox.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Download and install the most recent NVIDIA Studio driver (January Studio Driver).
  • Ensure Windows HDR features are enabled by navigating to System > Display > HDR.
  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to Adjust video image settings > RTX Video Enhancement — then enable HDR.
