This free 3D app will help you improve your upcoming projects thanks to comparative vertebrate anatomy

This article is also available in: French

A few years ago, we published an article about Vertebrates, a free comparative anatomy 3D atlas developped by Laetoli Production. This tool has been improved recently, and it features new 3D models.

In a nutshell, Vertebrates provides real-time 3D visualization of various vertebrate skeletons from museum collections. About forty specimens are available, featuring a wide variety of species: horse, rhinoceros, gorilla, iguanodon, humans, sea lion, frog, fish, antelope… And even an Australopithecus, the famous Lucy.
Once you have selected a species, you can view the 3D model, select bones, compare two skeletons, and use various angle/distance measurement tools. Some specimens even come with walking cycles. Please note, however, that you can’t download the models.
While the initial version required users to register and download an app, it is now possible to access this tool online and for free (PC/Mac/Android versions remain available if needed). The tool is available both in French and English.

Thanks to new partnerships with museums, Laetoli Production explains us that more 3D models will be available in the coming months.

This should help you to refine your anatomy skills and provide useful references for your future 3D creatures. Check out Vertebrates if you haven’t done so already!
