Pixar announced a new Art Challenge, with more than $80.000 in prizes given to the winners. You can win a high-end workstation, software licences as well as Pixar goodies. All of this thanks to Pixar and several sponsors.
How to enter the contest
This art challenge is open to everyone, including people hwho don’t own a RenderMan licence: you can use the free, non-commercial version of the renderer with your favourite 3D software
The challenge webpage will give you more information. Clicking on “Participate” will send you over to the RenderMan forums (you can register for free), with four useful sections:
- “Art Challenge Explanation”.
- “Art Challenge Resources” with free 3D models and free software licences to help you achieve your vision during this challenge.
- a FAQ
- “General Discussion”, to ask questions if needed.
To enter the contest, you will need to download a 3D scene, tweak it as you like, work on the texturing, lighting, and render it using RenderMan.
The Art Challenge theme is “exploration”. Group collaborations are not permitted, and all submissions must be rendered with any of the official RenderMan Plugins (Maya, Houdini, Katana, and Blender)..
Deadline & judges
The deadline is set to Tuesday November 15th, 2022 – Midnight PST (Pacific Standard Time – USA). Winners will be announced on Monday November 28th, 2022.
Judges come from Pixar Animation Studios as well as from the Pixar’s RenderMan team. One judge is R&D Lead at ILM, and another one is Lead, scientific visualization studio at NASA.
Judging will be 50% narrative, 50% technical.
Prizes
More than $80.000 in prizes will be given to three winners: a brand new workstation, software licences, cloud rendering credits, Pixar goodies such as the RenderMan Teapot… Honorable mentions will also be given a box of Pixar goodies.
