While the photorealistic remake of The Lion King was a huge commercial success (more than 1.6 billion dollars worldwide at the box office), the film also received many critiques. Many lamented that the characters were less expressive, resembling more of a wildlife documentary than the 2D animated film from 1994.
The new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, which will explore the youth of Mufasa and Scar (called Taka as a young lion), shows that the studio has taken these comments into account. The characters’ expressions have been pushed further, and there are also multiple uses of short focal lengths and close-ups. Mufasa and Taka are therefore much more expressive, and the result is moving further away from the realism of the previous film. However, the rendering still maintains a photorealistic approach.
The result thus stands out quite distinctly from the previous film: it remains to be seen how the audience will react. Feel free to share your thoughts on the matter!
The film is directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, Dear White People) and the animation is done by by MPC. The release date is set for December 20 in the USA.
