Illumination Entertainment unveils the first trailer for Migration, their upcoming animated feature. The film is produced by Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri, with a screenplay by Mike White (The Emoji Movie, Pitch Perfect 3, The One and Only Ivan, The White Lotus).
Illumination asked Benjamin Renner to direct. A bold choice since this French director is known for 2D animated features (Ernest & Celestine, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales…). This choice might lead to a surprising movie: we can’t wait to watch the end result.
Here is the pitch, followed by the trailer:
The Mallard family is in a bit of rut.
While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.
As the Mallards make their way South for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry. The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.
Compared to the footage unveiled at Annecy, new shots are included.
At Annecy, Illumination screened the first 25 minutes of the animated feature. This part of the movie focuses on the characters and the beginning of their journey. We only watched a glimpse of what happened afterwards: Chris Meledandri and Benjamin Renner discussed the arrival of the family at NY, with these impressive building in the mist.
MigrationMovie is only in theaters Dec. 22.
