The Annecy Festival will take place on the 9th to 15th June 2024. The largest global event dedicated to animation will offer a vast selection of short and feature films, conferences. The Film Market (MIFA) will feature an exhibition floor as well, pitching events, and much more.
The complete program hasn’t been announced yet, but the Festival has revealed a few hightlights. Here’s what you should know.
Portuguese Animation Takes the Stage
This year, the International Animation Film Festival will pay tribute to Portuguese animation. Last year, the country celebrated a century of animation.
The Annecy Festival will showcase 7 dedicated programs on Portugal, and three Portuguese professionals will join the jury. We will know more very soon.
Wes Anderson – Exclusive Masterclass
Filmmaker Wes Anderson will attend the Annecy Festival to discuss animated filmmaking during a masterclass. As you know, he directed two stop-motion feature films: Fantastic Mr. Fox which received a Crystal at Annecy, as well as Isle of Dogs.
More recently, his feature film The French Dispatch, included an animated sequence.
During the masterclass, Wes Anderson will reflect on his approach to animation and his vision as a director. Furthermore, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs will be screened during the Festival.
Animation & Dance
Dance has always been a source of inspiration for animation: the Annecy Festival proved it again last year with a presentation on the making of Star Wars Visions by Studio La Cachette.
This year, a cycle dedicated to dance and choreography will explore “the different ways in which dance has influenced and inspired animation filmmakers.”
A New Feature Film Section
The Annecy Festival Official Selection will have a new section “devoted to feature films for all audiences especially youngsters.”
A non-competitive section, Annecy Presents, will allow you to discover a wide range of films “of all genres from around the world” to broaden the diversity of the Festival.
Of course, the Screening Events aren’t going anywhere and will remain one of the highlights of the week. rThese out-of-competition sessions allow major studios to screen their upcoming animated feature films without having to submit them to the competition. Other studios showcase exclusive, work in progress sequences of their upcoming projects, as well as conferences.
Morning screenings: Rise and Shine!
With the increase of the number of festivalgoers, getting tickets to screenings is a recurring issue. To improve the situation, the organizing team had already expanded the Festival last year. In 2024, the Festival “will be operating in 4 more cinema theatres”. Furthermore, additional morning screenings are planned at 8.30 am.
In other words, more screnings are planned!
XR&Games Area
The Festival also announces an XR&Games Area, focused on virtual/augmented/mixed reality and video games. Located at the Chambre de Métiers et de l’Artisanat (and therefore close to the Imperial Palace and the Film Market), this area will “create new connections between animation, video games and immersive experiences, thanks to exclusive content for badgeholders.”
