Following their VFX Bake-Off event, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled a video showcasing the work behind each of this year’s Oscar nominated films for Achievement in Visual Effects.

The video includes information and behind the scenes footage from Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, as well as… Top Gun : Maverick. Which actually does include a lot of impressive visual effects, even if when the movie was released, the marketing team decided to downplay the use of CGI and mostly focused on practical effects.

This showcase includes previously unreleased footage. You’ll learn about the use of LED panels during the shooting of The Batman, how water simulations were a key part of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and how the VFX team blended simulations with on-set water effects, how those F-14 shots were created for Top Gun: Maverick since shooting them in camera was out of the question (these planes are retired), or the jaw-dropping work done on Avatar: The Way of Water when it comes to water interactions, performance capture.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 12.
