Watch Fady, a short film created by students from French digital arts school ARTFX and inspired by Malagasy legends.
In the town of Mananjary in western Madagascar, having twins is a taboo that brings a curse, also called the fady. As a mother prepares to abandon her newborns, an old man tells her the legend and fate of the twins Pily and Fanany.
This short film from French digital arts school ARTFX (class of 2022) features a lot of visual effects: characters, FX, creatures, vegetation… The short film was directed by Husain Engineeringwala, Ahmed Hassanin, Jingwan Ma, Jean-Baptiste Ollivier, Falinirina Rakotoson, Pawan Randive, Remy Vu. They were helped by several “specialist students”: Loïc Mattern, Émilie Picard, Xin Pang.
The team created a making-of video. It features behind-the-scenes pictures of the shooting, concept arts. Finding the right place to shoot was not an easy task, since the team wanted a location that could be turned into a believable Malagasy forest.
SpeedTree and Megascans were used to create foliage and vegetation. The snake was another huge task, from finding good references to polishing the animation.
The team used photogrammetry to digitize assets as well as actors. Motion capture was also used: the making-of video will give you a glimpse of this part of the production as well. Last, but not least, near the eand of the video, you will learn how the impressive FX (tornado, wall of clouds) were created.
On the software side, the team used tools such as Houdini, ZBrush, Maya, V-Ray, MARI, Substance tools, NUKE, Resolve.
